A local insider’s guide to enjoying Brisbane

We quizzed a friendly local insider about what to do while we’re in town, and here is their lowdown…

Queensland Gallery of Modern Art - exterior.

While you are in town, make sure you visit the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art. (QAOMA)

Q: I have one day in Brisbane. What should I do?

A: There’s a lot you can cover in the CBD. For culture, visit the Queensland Performing Arts Centre or the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art.

There’s also street art on Fish Lane, and First Nations businesses such as Aboriginal Art Co, which promotes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art and products.

For some retail therapy, go to Queen Street Mall and Edward Street. And there are some amazing dining precincts.

One of the great things about Brisbane is that everything in the CBD is within walking distance, and there are so many great things happening.

Felons Brewing Co. is a hugely popular brewery with views of Story Bridge and beyond.

Q: Where will I find the best coffee, the best meal, and the best spot for a glass of wine at the end of the day?

A: This is so hard, as there are so many great places! For coffee, try Ricochet on Edward Street, but I would wait until after the morning rush. There’s always a long line from about 7am to 9am.

For dinner, it’s impossible to choose only one. Agnes was Gourmet Traveller’s restaurant of the year for Australia in 2023, and Tillerman is amazing for seafood.

You can’t go past Howard Smith Wharves, where you’ll find excellent food from all over the world, plus Felon’s Brewing Co, where you can get a nice cold beer, sit on a beanbag and watch the Story Bridge light up in all of its glory.

For a glass of wine, I would choose somewhere with a really cool view of Brisbane. Perhaps the Terrace Rooftop Bar at the Emporium Hotel, where you can enjoy a lovely Brisbane sunset.

Q: I have a few days to spare… what’s an iconic Brisbane experience I can’t miss?

A: I always recommend the Queensland Art Gallery. It’s home to Australian art, and First Nations artworks, and they have amazing international exhibitions coming through all the time.

Until April 2025, the gallery is hosting The 11th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, featuring works from more than 30 countries.

You can also tour iconic locations from Bluey (in real life!), including South Bank, Streets Beach and the Botanical Gardens.

Q: Where can I explore the great outdoors?

A: The Mount Coot-tha summit and lookout are just 10 to 15 minutes out of the city, and there are beautiful hikes and walks through there.

Visit Mount Tambourine for the rainforest skywalk, and more hikes and waterfalls. Or if you prefer the ocean, Tangalooma Island Resort offers wreck diving, dolphin feeding, and whale watching. It’s just stunning.

Q: Now I have my itinerary, what’s the best way to get around?

A: Brisbane’s public transport is really accessible. Busses are regular, with the free city loop busses covering the CBD and some other precincts. The ferry is another gorgeous way to see the city.

And if you get lost, I recommend chatting to the locals. People here have a sunny disposition. They’re open, kind and always willing to help.
