Meet Malachai Clements - a Groundbreaker reducing food insecurity in remote Australia
evokeAG. 2025 Groundbreaker, Malachai Clements is on a mission to reduce food insecurity in remote Australian communities.

The new Groundbreakers program will take centre stage at evokeAG. 2025. Previously known as the Future Young Leaders program, it will maintain the same emphasis on developing and working with young leaders but now, better reflect the innovative and impactful leadership of the participants.
One such leader is Malachai Clements, a groundbreaker from Weipa in Queensland’s gulf country who is tackling the health issues in his part of the world at a grassroots level while studying to be a chiropractor.
Due to its remote location, Weipa only receives produce via barges from Cairns, which can be disrupted by cyclones, torrential rain and other weather events. The produce that does arrive has a short shelf life, leading to poor health outcomes.
Malachai, an aspiring chiropractor with strong connections to Indigenous and agricultural Australia, hopes to spread awareness about the challenges faced in remote communities and encourage agricultural education through his engagement with the evokeAG. 2025 Groundbreaker Program.
He is in the process of establishing a community orchard in Weipa, where people can come for fresh, free produce and learn how to propagate and grow their own plants. In the long-run, he wants to scale-up this community garden to empower the whole population of Cape York with the skills and tools needed to become agriculturally self-sufficient.
He joins Jayne Cuddihy to discuss the importance of proper nutrition and community engagement. Malachai Clements will be at evokeAG. 2025, and is hoping to speak to leaders in the agricultural sector who want to make real change on the frontline.
Major sponsor Coles is excited to be on board we also hear from their Lead Sustainable Sourcing Manager, Lauren Mackenzie.
