Taiwan agritech interest spearheaded by investment in southeast Queensland
Leading Taiwanese agritech enterprise, Hann Gan International Co, will spend A$8.5 million to develop a vegetable and fruit farm with a warehouse and high-tech packing facility at Gatton in southeast Queensland, with the aim of providing counter-seasonal supply to Taiwan. Hann Gan executives were among 25 Taiwanese delegates to attend evokeAG. 2025 in Brisbane, seeking to explore trade opportunities and collaborations with agritech companies. Here we learn more about the delegation, its takeaways from evokeAG. 2025, and how Taiwan’s strategic investment in Queensland is paving the way for deeper agtech collaboration, innovation in smart farming, and enhanced bilateral trade opportunities.
The two Taiwanese delegations were led by the Ministry of Agriculture, Taiwan (MOA) and Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), whose 2030 Technology Strategy & Roadmap focuses on collaborations with domestic and international partners in academia, industry, and government.
Bilateral trade and innovation opportunities
Hosting the delegations at evokeAG. 2025 was Lisa Chen, Director of Investment in Taiwan for Trade and Investment Queensland (TIQ).
“From a TIQ perspective, we champion inbound investments by Taiwan in Queensland as well as outbound export and trade. The current volatile trading conditions with the USA are prompting Taiwanese businesses to look for places where stability and transparency are key,” Lisa explained.
“The Taiwanese community in Brisbane is known to be one of the largest and fastest-growing in Australia, so there are a lot of opportunities that can be amped up or advocated in Queensland, and we learned a lot about them at evokeAG.”
Key takeaways from evokeAG. 2025
Lisa said during evokeAG. 2025 and related events, the Taiwanese delegations engaged with multiple Australian agribusiness stakeholders, including government representatives, potential joint venture partners, and local service providers across the supply chain.
These included: Withcott Seedlings, Tosari Crop Research Centre, Story Fresh, Pulse Data Centre, RDO Equipment, Pyrocal, SwarmFarm Robotics and Pinata Farms, and a meeting with Mandalay Venture Partners.
“Key takeaways from evokeAG. were Queensland’s counter-seasonal advantages, skilled workforce, and government openness to international partnerships, as well as the state’s strong agricultural infrastructure, favourable investment climate, and strategic interest in enhancing bilateral agri-trade with Taiwan,” said Lisa.
“We also identified significant potential in several key areas, including vegetable and fruit export operations to address Taiwan’s seasonal supply gaps; technology collaboration with companies working in automation and smart farming such as AGVs, drones, robotic arms, and AI advances; and market-led innovations that align with global food security and sustainability trends.”
Elevating export potential through post-harvest innovation
Lisa said the investment by Hann Gan International Co, (Hann Gan) one of the largest wholesale distributors and primary producers of fruit and vegetables in southern Taiwan, would benefit agritech in Australia.
Hann Gan utilises innovative technology with fresh product cold chain logistics and packaging to extend the post-slicing shelf life of packaged fruit and vegetables to 12 days, and is investing in Queensland as a source of counter-seasonal supply.
“Hann Gan has been a pioneer in packing technology to enhance the quality of produce and to prolong the preservation period once processed, and from an exporting perspective, the technology is a game changer,” said Lisa.
“The company is committed to working with the Australian government to establish globally competitive modern agricultural systems, enhance food security and stability, promote agricultural smartification to increase farmers’ incomes, and deliver premium products to consumers.”
Mooko Farm: A strategic gateway for Taiwan-Australia agritech
Hann Gan is managed by third generation brothers, Colin Ko and Victor Ko, with a fourth generation currently being educated in Queensland.
The company has purchased 56 hectares of land to establish its Australian operation, Mooko Farm Pty Ltd, and is considering its options to build a facility from scratch, form a joint venture, or acquire an existing packing operation.
Prior to evokeAG. 2025, representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture, Taiwan attended the Australia-Taiwan 19th Agricultural Working Group Meeting in Brisbane, hosted by Australia’s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF).
Discussions ranged from technical cooperation in response to climate change and the agricultural use of technologies like drones and AI, to policies on Australia’s implementation of carbon certification systems, and DAFF’s agreement to assist Taiwan in the establishment of a soil monitoring system.
