Innovation demonstration by Agricultural Innovation Australia’s Environmental Accounting Platform
10:20am — 10:50am
Demonstration
Demo Stage
AIA has created an Environmental Accounting Platform which will provide Australian agriculture, fisheries and forestry value chains with an accessible and standardised approach to carbon footprinting.
The platform is designed to be a definitive, whole of sector carbon calculation engine. It will enable growers to understand their enterprise’s carbon footprint across multiple commodities and make better informed decisions around reducing emissions and capturing new opportunities.
AIA’s platform is pre-competitive, integrating with channels that growers already use and trust, including farm management software, agricultural services provider offerings, agrifinance, and others.
A Technical Advisory Panel supports the integrity and compliance of the platform, comprised of Australian experts in greenhouse gas accounting, emissions reduction, soil carbon management, lifecycle assessment and climate science.

Innovation demonstration by Farmed Carbon
11:00am — 11:15am
Demonstration
Demo Stage
Farmed Carbon, an Australian technology firm, innovates rice straw waste management by converting it into bio-asphalt.
Annually, the rice industry produces over 1 billion tons of straw waste, often burnt, releasing 2 billion tons of CO2, posing risks to farmers and causing severe air pollution. Farmed Carbon’s cutting-edge local technology offers a sustainable shift, turning a highly carbon-intensive crop into an eco-friendlier option. Through microwave pyrolysis, they create biochar and bio-oil, providing viable alternatives. By targeting road and construction sectors, they diminish dependence on carbon-heavy imports like bitumen and cement, enhancing safety for farmers and fostering cleaner air for local communities.

Innovating for good: How agrifood tech can digitise food supply chains and reduce food waste
11:20am — 11:40am
Morning Breakout
Keynote
Elders Plenary
A third of all the food we produce globally is wasted.
Food fraud costs the industry $40 billion per year. How, and where in the supply chain can technology help avoid this waste? How can it deliver consistent and high-quality products to consumers, while preventing recalls?
Hear the amazing story behind one of the most exciting agrifood tech innovations in years.
Abi is a food systems entrepreneur, co-founding Papi’s Pickles in 2014, a food social enterprise providing fresh and tasty Tamil food made by women from these communities who relocated to the UK during the civil war in Sri Lanka, and ImpactVision in 2016, an imaging and machine learning technology startup tackling the $1 trillion food waste problem from a post-harvest standpoint. ImpactVision was acquired in February 2020 by Apeel Sciences, and until September 2023, Abi was a Project Lead at Google X’s Moonshot Factory working on synthetic biology for climate applications.
With over 70% of Australian agricultural produce exported down long and disparate supply chains, keeping track of Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions is as complex as it is important for primary producers.
As we approach 2030, annual GHG emission audits will become commonplace and necessary, if farmers are to maintain market access. But accurate emissions accounting requires specialist expertise which aren’t easily found. Hear from Australia’s pre-eminent sustainability academic as he highlights the important role of an agreed, accessible, and user friendly greenhouse gas accounting framework for all sectors of the agriculture industry, and how producers and processors alike can get started down this path.
Leading the Primary Industries Climate Challenges Centre within the University of Melbourne, Professor Richard Eckhard addresses the impacts of a changing climate on agriculture His research focuses on sustainable agricultural production, with a recent focus on carbon neutral agriculture and options for agriculture to respond to a changing climate. Richard developed the first greenhouse gas accounting tools for agriculture with his research and expertise provided the science basis for the development of six carbon offset methods in Australia. Richard advises the Australian, New Zealand and UK governments on climate change adaptation and agricultural policy development.

FarmLab offers an ecosystem of environmental measurement services and software, facilitating the digitisation of on-farm environmental data.
In the agrifood industry, the primary challenge is the scattered and non-digitised state of environmental data, residing in spreadsheets, filing cabinets, or among various consultants and labs. This fragmentation impedes farmers from engaging in environmental markets, making informed sustainable decisions, and implementing precision agriculture techniques for improved yields. FarmLab addresses this by centralising and digitising crucial data, ensuring accessibility for farmers and stakeholders.
FarmLab’s integrated environmental management solution connects testing labs, field samplers, and consultants, streamlining sample collection, testing, and data mapping. This approach offers standardised, accessible data, empowering farmers with critical insights for sustainable decisions and improved agricultural practices.

We are in the middle of a massive paradigm shift. Paradigm blindness is catching a lot of companies off guard, and fault lines are emerging in business as we know it.
According to Bloomberg, the vast majority of executives plan to increase their ESG data spend by at least 10%, with 18% planning an increase of 50% or more.
Morningstar, Inc. estimated that total assets in ESG designated funds totaled more than US$3.9 trillion at the end of September 2021.
And a group of thirty-two asset managers and investors managing $7.3 trillion in assets recently urged the G20, to link their financial support to the agricultural sector with their environmental obligations.
For those investing, innovating, creating and designing, the opportunity couldn’t be bigger.

The Grower Group Alliance 'Lift Off' Grower Group Exchange Experience
The Grower Group Alliance (GGA) is a diverse and thriving state-wide network of over 65 local farmer-led grower groups (or farming systems groups) that have a collective membership exceeding 4,000 Western Australian (WA) farmers operating across all sectors of agriculture including broadacre cropping, livestock, horticulture and other niche sectors.
Lift Off’ is an annual event delivered by the GGA which aims to build alignment across the GGA network at the start of the year consolidating important working relationships, providing valuable operational updates and opportunity for capacity building.
This year GGA aims to enrich Lift Off hosting a 2-hour WA x interstate x international ‘show and tell’ grower group exchange experience with visiting delegates that will be in Perth for evokeAG. Our regular ‘around-the-room’ update from local WA groups introducing themselves will be expanded to include and hear from visiting interstate and international groups about how their group works locally, the kind of work they are doing and the sorts of challenges they face in their own areas.
If you are an interstate or international organisation that is a grower group, or working in a context that supports, or interacts with local, on ground farmer led-farming systems groups, we’d love to hear about your work. Interstate groups (outside of the NGGC) and international groups interested in registering to be part of our ‘Lift Off’ grower group exchange experience should first complete our ‘Expression of Interest’ Form so we can check your eligibility.
