Olympia Yarger

Olympia Yarger is a Canberra based farmer who operates out of a warehouse in Fyshwick. Like any other farmer, Olympia produces a commodity to be bought and sold according to normal market forces. Unlike most farmers however, she grows insects specifically black soldier fly larvae to be used primarily as feed for fish and poultry. Her farm engages a range of experts from chemical engineers to entomologists to roboticists and uses cutting edge science and technology in its processes.

With an eye to the future, Goterra manages commercial, agricultural and industrial food waste to grow her commodity, tackling global concerns regarding land use for livestock fodder. Some experts suggest that up to 33% of the world’s arable land is used to produce feed for the animals we eat. Olympia is an innovator that is at the forefront of the future of farming…perhaps also the future of food.
